New Delhi, Dec 9 (NationPress) The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) in partnership with IIT Madras is gearing up to organize a pre-summit event in Chennai on December 11, aimed at furthering India's objective for secure, trustworthy, and inclusive artificial intelligence (AI), as announced by the government on Tuesday.
Rooted in India's dedication to ethical, safe, and inclusive AI, the conclave will work towards implementing AI safety and governance principles, according to an official statement.
The Centre for Responsible AI (CeRAI) at IIT Madras, in collaboration with the IndiaAI Mission under MeitY, is hosting this event as a precursor to the upcoming 'India–AI Impact Summit 2026' scheduled for early next year.
This conclave will explore avenues for establishing an AI Safety Commons for the Global South, which will create shared datasets, benchmarks, and governance resources aimed at fostering safer and more reliable AI development.
Furthermore, discussions will center around applying responsible AI principles into actionable governance and regulatory frameworks that can be adapted across various cultural, legal, and technological landscapes.
As AI systems become essential in both public and private sectors, concerns regarding fairness, accountability, and potential misuse have escalated, underscoring the necessity for frameworks that are scalable, enforceable, and appropriate for diverse global contexts, as stated by the IT Ministry.
The 'Safe and Trusted AI Working Group' at the event aims to address these challenges by fostering an ecosystem rooted in transparency, reliability, and public trust, where innovation can thrive responsibly, ensuring equitable distribution of AI benefits.
The program will commence with a formal inauguration on the evening of December 10, followed by a hybrid, closed-door working group meeting on December 11, focusing on the practical application of AI safety and governance principles.
Bringing together senior officials from MeitY, as well as national and international experts from industry, academia, civil society, and government, the event marks a significant step.
Being held in the Global South for the first time, the 'India–AI Impact Summit 2026' is set to take place from February 15 to 20, 2026, at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.
The summit aspires to highlight AI's transformative potential in promoting inclusive development, sustainability, and equitable progress.
