New Delhi, June 26 (NationPress) The Indian tea industry in the organized sector employs approximately 12 lakh workers, with a significant 58 percent of this workforce being women, as stated by Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday.
“Women are at the forefront of India’s tea industry expansion. Our country continues to shine on the global stage with its fragrant teas and consistent export growth,” Goyal shared on the X social media platform.
For the fiscal year 2025, the overall volume of tea exported reached 263 million kg, yielding a total value of Rs 7,818 crore according to data from the DGCIS.
Recent statistics from the Commerce Ministry indicate that tea shipments increased by 10.8 percent, rising from $0.83 billion to $0.92 billion.
In 2024, the tea exports from India achieved a remarkable 10-year high of 255 million kg, despite facing challenges in the global market due to geopolitical issues, as compiled by the Tea Board of India.
India exports tea to over 25 countries, with major markets including the UAE, Iraq, Iran, Russia, the USA, and the UK. India ranks among the top five tea exporters worldwide, accounting for about 10 percent of global exports.
The country is renowned for its Assam, Darjeeling, and Nilgiri teas, which are regarded as some of the finest globally. The majority of the tea exported from India is black tea, constituting about 96 percent of total exports, while other varieties such as regular tea, green tea, herbal tea, masala tea, and lemon tea also contribute.
Efforts have been made to enhance tea production, establish a unique brand for Indian tea, and ensure the well-being of families involved in the tea industry.
The Assam Valley and Cachar are the primary tea-growing regions in Assam, while in West Bengal, the Dooars, Terai, and Darjeeling regions are key producers. The southern part of India contributes about 17 percent of the country’s total tea output, with Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka being the leading states.
Currently, there are nearly 2.30 lakh small tea growers within the supply chain.
