New Delhi, July 15 (NationPress) After a remarkable 41 years since Rakesh Sharma's spaceflight in 1984, India proudly launched a new astronaut into the cosmos: Shubhanshu Shukla.

Shukla has made history as the first Indian to reach the International Space Station (ISS), shining brightly as a beacon of India's growing stature in the global space community.

The 20-day mission, orchestrated by the private American firm Axiom Space in partnership with NASA, SpaceX, and various governmental space agencies including ISRO, commenced its journey to the ISS on June 26.

On Tuesday, Shukla returned to Earth alongside fellow astronauts from the US, Poland, and Hungary aboard SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft named Grace.

A native of Lucknow, Shukla was selected as an astronaut by ISRO in 2019, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's announcement in 2018 from the Red Fort, promising that an Indian would venture into space shortly.

In January 2025, the 39-year-old astronaut was appointed as the pilot for the Ax-4 mission, a collaborative effort between NASA and ISRO.

Shukla is recognized as the youngest astronaut-designate under India’s Gaganyaan mission, which marks the nation's inaugural human spaceflight endeavor.

In an interview with IANS in March, Shukla expressed his aspiration to utilize his “journey to inspire a generation to pursue careers in space,” noting that he was greatly motivated by Rakesh Sharma.

During the Ax-4 mission, Shukla served as the mission pilot, collaborating with Commander Peggy Whitson from the US.

“As the mission pilot, I will manage systems, navigate the vehicle, analyze data, and, if necessary, intervene manually,” Shukla explained to IANS.

While aboard the ISS, Shukla executed seven innovative experiments focused on food and space nutrition, crucial for developing sustainable life-support systems for extended space missions.

ISRO confirmed that experiments involving Indian strains of tardigrades, myogenesis, sprouting of methi and moong seeds, cyanobacteria, microalgae, and crop seeds were successfully completed as planned.

Shukla's mission serves as a significant inspiration for millions of Indians and is a pivotal step towards India's Gaganyaan human spaceflight mission, anticipated for 2027.
