Chennai, Dec 8 (NationPress) Government schools in Tamil Nadu are set to empower students from Classes 6 to 9 with essential skills in electronics, robotics, and drone technology through engaging hands-on experiences. The School Education Department is initiating a groundbreaking robotics education program aimed at enhancing STEM learning at an early age.
As part of this pilot scheme, 15 robotics laboratories will be established across 15 districts to ignite students' passion for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
The curriculum for this innovative course is being developed by the State Council for Educational Research and Training (SCERT) in partnership with Anna University, which is also serving as the knowledge collaborator.
A senior official from the department noted that the course will emphasize practical activities, with a remarkable 90% of sessions dedicated to experiments and projects, leaving only 10% for theoretical discussions.
During the course, students will engage in 10 meticulously designed experiments that explore real-world applications of electronics, robotics, and fundamental scientific concepts. Each student will benefit from two hours of dedicated lab time per week.
The establishment of each robotics lab comes at an investment of Rs 40 lakh, featuring 11 types of advanced kits, including robotics STEM workstations, design and prototype virtual labs, multifunctional robotics kits, and a smart dustbin initiative.
In addition to robotics, students will be introduced to foundational concepts in physics and electronics using real-life problem-solving models.
Upon completion of the program, Anna University will conduct practical assessments, with certificates awarded to students who successfully finish the course.
These robotics labs were initially proposed under the centrally sponsored Samagra Shiksha scheme, aiming to set up facilities in 38 schools across all districts. However, the Union government later withheld approved funds due to disagreements over the three-language formula related to PM SHRI schools.
In light of this setback, the Tamil Nadu government has opted to fully finance and implement the initiative in phases.
In this initial phase, robotics labs will be launched in 15 districts including Chennai, Kancheepuram, Kanyakumari, Pudukkottai, Vellore, Salem, Thoothukudi, Tirupathur, Tiruvarur, Dharmapuri, Tiruchirappalli, Kallakurichi, Coimbatore, Sivaganga, and Virudhunagar.
Once the syllabus and textbooks are finalized, student training in these labs will commence, marking a significant advancement towards integrating future-ready skills into government school education.
