Kolkata, Nov 14 (NationPress) India’s bowlers have further solidified their control over the first Test match by limiting South Africa to 154/8 in 52 overs at tea during the opening day at Eden Gardens this Friday. Following a balanced morning session, India took charge in the post-lunch phase, taking five wickets for just 49 runs in 25 overs.
In addition to Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav, who each claimed one wicket, Mohammed Siraj found his rhythm, taking two crucial wickets, while Axar Patel contributed with a wicket just before tea. With Tristan Stubbs remaining not out on 15, India is optimistic about wrapping up South Africa’s innings swiftly in the upcoming post-tea session and having a chance to bat before stumps.
Kuldeep and Bumrah set the tone right after lunch with their unwavering accuracy. Their relentless efforts paid off when Wiaan Mulder’s attempt to reverse-sweep Kuldeep resulted in him being trapped lbw, while the all-rounder also wasted a review.
Bumrah's inswinger kept low, coming in from around the wicket to trap Tony de Zorzi lbw for 24. Although Stubbs and Kyle Verreynne tried to stabilize South Africa’s innings, Siraj found his form with some reverse swing, striking twice in the 45th over to dismiss Verreynne and Marco Jansen.
Verreynne was slow to bring his bat down and was trapped lbw by a nip-backer from Siraj, while Marco Jansen was bowled for a three-ball duck as Siraj got one to tail in from length. Axar joined the wicket-takers just before tea by trapping Corbin Bosch lbw with a straight delivery, leaving India pleased and South Africa in a troubling position.
Brief Scores: South Africa 154/8 in 52 overs (Aiden Markram 31, Ryan Rickelton 23; Jasprit Bumrah 3-23, Kuldeep Yadav 2-36) against India
