Kolkata, Nov 14 (NationPress) India has made a significant move by reintroducing Rishabh Pant and Axar Patel to their playing eleven as South Africa won the toss and opted to bat first in the opening match of the Test series at Eden Gardens on Friday.

South Africa, the reigning World Test Championship champions, come into this match following a 1-1 draw in Pakistan and are participating in a Test in India for the first time in six years. On the other hand, India arrives after a convincing 2-0 series win against the West Indies at home last month.

Pant, who is returning from a right foot fracture, has taken over the wicketkeeping responsibilities, stepping in for Nitish Kumar Reddy, who has been released to participate in the India A 50-over matches against South Africa A in Rajkot.

Meanwhile, Axar replaces B Sai Sudharsan in the line-up, allowing India to field all four spinners along with another keeper-batter, Dhruv Jurel, who is set to bat at number seven.

Interestingly, off-spin all-rounder Washington Sundar is positioned to bat at number three, according to the team sheet. “I think the only toss that I'm going to win is hopefully in the WTC finals. Looks like a good surface. Hopefully, we'll get some movement early, and we can capitalize on that. The dressing room is pretty amazing.

“This Test team is very eager and consistently aims to perform whenever we take the field. These two Test matches are crucial for us, and we are as motivated as ever. It seems like a good surface, likely to remain favorable for the first day or two. Then, we hope to see some turn as the match progresses,” stated India captain Shubman Gill.

South Africa's captain Temba Bavuma confirmed that fast bowling star Kagiso Rabada is unavailable due to a rib injury, with Corbin Bosch stepping in.

“The team just returned from Pakistan, and I was with the A team. From a preparation standpoint, we've done our utmost. Playing in front of 50,000-60,000 fans is a unique experience, and I am eager for the challenge.

“Being back in India is always enlightening. I am looking forward to everything. It feels great to hold the title of World Test Champions. We aim to maintain our performance with pride. The pitch is somewhat dry with limited grass, typical of Indian wickets. Scoring in the first innings will be pivotal,” he added.
