The dismissal, off Wessly Madhevere's bowling in the 15th over, ended one of the most eye-catching innings of the series — and Evans made no secret of the motivation behind his effort.

'Obviously, big player and he is going to go on to do amazing things but I didn't want him to get his first hundred against Zimbabwe so I put in extra effort there,' Evans told broadcasters during the mid-innings break. Evans returned figures of 2 for 41 in his four overs, a spell he assessed with characteristic candour. 'I think I came back into my spell in the back end quite well. Was quite disappointed with my first over,' he said, referring to the 15 runs he conceded in that opening burst. His two wickets in the back-end overs provided Zimbabwe some control after the early damage.

Evans also acknowledged that Zimbabwe took too long to find the right approach against India's batting order. 'I think it's taken three games too long to work out the best antidote against the batters. But it's a world-class batting lineup and they keep coming. But I love the challenge,' he said.
