Bengaluru, July 5 (NationPress) Neeraj Chopra, a two-time Olympic medalist, expressed satisfaction but also contemplation after his triumph at the inaugural Neeraj Chopra Classic. While he was pleased with the outcome, the reigning world champion acknowledged that his technique was not optimal and that the conditions were far from perfect, which he felt hindered his chances of a 90-meter throw.
During the NC Classic 2025, held in breezy conditions at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium, the 27-year-old achieved a winning throw of 86.18 meters on his third attempt.
"I believed I could have surpassed 88 meters. Given how I felt, even a 90-meter throw seemed within reach. However, the conditions weren’t ideal. My run-up was not great today, and my technique was also lacking — yet, I still managed a commendable mark, so I’m quite content," Chopra shared with IANS.
Earlier in a press conference, Neeraj admitted, "I made a technical error at the beginning — my first throw was a foul, and I was leaning to the left. My coach suggested I throw straight. There was a slight technical issue, but overall, things went well. I believe I could have performed better, but I’m thrilled to have won the first edition. My primary goal was to ensure this competition’s success."
The Neeraj Chopra Classic, co-organized by Neeraj himself, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), and World Athletics, was initially scheduled to be held at Panchkula's Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Haryana. However, it was relocated to the Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru due to floodlight issues at the original venue.
"The support here has been fantastic. Initially, we planned to host the event in Haryana, but due to technical issues with the lighting, we moved it. The Bengaluru stadium was excellent, and I’ve visited it several times before as well.
"Wherever we hold the event in India... This time it was Bengaluru. We will strive to organize it even better next time, whether in Delhi or Haryana... I’m truly pleased with the public support we received. We will definitely aim to host the next NC Classic in Haryana," Neeraj mentioned to IANS when asked about hosting future events in Haryana.
Neeraj, who took on the dual role of organizer and competitor, reflected on the days leading up to the competition, stating, "The last few days were quite challenging. It felt somewhat unusual to compete in an event named after me. However, I'm delighted that I get to keep the medal and trophy from the inaugural edition at home."
