New Delhi, June 13 (NationPress) The president of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), Kalyan Chaubey, has declared that the executive committee is set to convene on June 29 to assess the future of India’s head coach, Manolo Marquez, following a series of disappointing results.
Manolo, who took charge in August 2024 after the contentious departure of Igor Stimac, has managed to secure only one win—a 3-0 friendly victory against the Maldives.
After being eliminated in the third round of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers last year, India is now facing challenges in securing a spot for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, a tournament that has seen India qualify since it expanded to 24 teams in 2019.
“Manolo Marquez is well-regarded and possesses a solid understanding of Indian football and its players. However, I have received numerous inquiries regarding his future. We will discuss this in detail during our executive committee meeting on June 29,” Chaubey informed reporters at a recent press event.
He also highlighted the issues plaguing the national team, suggesting that the absence of effective Indian forwards has contributed to their struggles. Since the beginning of 2024, India has managed to score only seven goals, three of which were against the Maldives.
“While it's true our national team has faced challenges against teams like Malaysia, Bangladesh, and Hong Kong, it's unrealistic to anticipate wins without scoring. India requires a competent striker. One potential fix is to limit the playtime of foreign strikers and provide more opportunities for Indian forwards in domestic leagues,” he added.
There has been significant discussion about the inclusion of Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) cardholders in the national team, following their ban in 2008, which currently allows only Indian passport holders to compete. Fans on social media have advocated for OCI holders to represent the country, and the AIFF president confirmed they are in contact with 33 eligible players.
“Fans have been curious about the OCI players. Several countries ranked lower have effectively utilized naturalized players. The AIFF is in touch with 33 players eligible for the OCI card, with some already having received it, while we are assisting others. The AIFF is doing everything within its power to secure approval and incorporate these players into the squad,” Kalyan stated.
