ATP Masters 1000: Alcaraz's Challenging Opener at Indian Wells
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Indian Wells (USA), March 3 (NationPress) Spanish tennis sensation Carlos Alcaraz, the defending champion of the Australian Open and top seed, is set to encounter a challenging match as he steps onto the court for his first contest at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.
The No. 1 player in the ATP Rankings will kick off the season's initial ATP Masters 1000 event against either former World No. 3 Grigor Dimitrov or the rising left-handed player Terence Atmane, with the five-time Indian Wells champion Novak Djokovic also positioned in his half of the draw.
Alcaraz faced Dimitrov in the California desert last year, dominating the Bulgarian by losing only two games in the fourth round. However, Dimitrov has demonstrated his prowess at Indian Wells, reaching the semi-finals in 2021 and the quarter-finals in 2022.
On the other hand, Atmane will be making his main draw debut at Indian Wells after participating in qualifying rounds. The French player made headlines last year at Cincinnati with an impressive run to the semi-finals and is currently ranked a career-high No. 52 in the ATP Rankings. The 24-year-old has split two previous ATP matches with Dimitrov, including a straight-sets win last week in Acapulco.
"It's incredible. I hope to have two exciting matches. We will remain focused on the first one," Atmane expressed to ATP Tour on Tuesday. "It's always enjoyable. We faced Grigor last week, so it's amusing to meet again. The victor of our match will have the opportunity to compete against Carlitos. It remains unpredictable for both of us, making it quite intriguing."
Meanwhile, Djokovic, who shares the record for the most titles in tournament history (5) with Roger Federer, is set to face either Kamil Majchrzak or Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in his first match since the Australian Open final. The Serbian suffered an unexpected first-round exit here last year against Botic van de Zandschulp and will aim for a strong start in pursuit of his 102nd tour-level title.
Seventh seed Taylor Fritz, the 2022 Indian Wells champion, is also situated in Djokovic's quarter of the draw. The top-ranked American will open against Damir Dzumhur or Jacob Fearnley.
Second seed Jannik Sinner is in pursuit of his first title in the desert and shares a quarter with eighth seed Ben Shelton, who arrives in California with momentum after clinching the title in Dallas. Sinner will face either James Duckworth or a qualifier in the second round.
