New Delhi, Oct 7 (NationPress) In a remarkable throwback, two legendary former world champions, Viswanathan Anand and Garry Kasparov, are set to face off in a unique exhibition match titled Clutch Chess: The Legends. This special event commemorates a legendary rivalry that captivated chess enthusiasts across the globe.
The pair previously clashed in the historic 1995 World Chess Championship held on the 107th floor of the World Trade Centre’s South Tower, with the iconic skyline of New York prominently featured.
Starting from October 7 to 11, the exhibition match will take place at the Saint Luise Chess Club. A prize fund of USD 144,000 will be distributed across an engaging 12-game Chess960 (Fischer Random) match format, incorporating rapid and blitz time controls along with a new scoring system designed to captivate both players and their fans.
Clutch Chess, an innovative tournament style created by Grandmaster Maurice Ashley, elevates the stakes with escalating rewards in each round, enhancing the thrill for both players and spectators.
In this format, no advantage is secure, as every game holds significance. The increasing point values for victories ensure that players who may start off slowly still have opportunities for stunning comebacks.
On the first day, each win is valued at 1 point and USD 1,000. By the second day, the value increases to 2 points and USD 2,000, and on the third day, it climbs to 3 points and USD 3,000.
In Clutch Chess: The Legends, the champion will take home USD 70,000, while the runner-up will receive USD 50,000 (or USD 60,000 each in the event of a tie). Over three days, the players will engage in 12 games with a fresh position drawn daily.
An additional USD 24,000 in bonus funds will be available. If a game ends in a draw, the prize will carry over to the 11th and 12th games, intensifying the stakes leading up to the final match.
Theoretically, the 12th game, a Blitz match with a 5-minute + 3-second time control, could offer the entire bonus of USD 24,000.
