Brisbane, Dec 7 (NationPress) Australia’s captain Steve Smith praised Michael Neser for his remarkable contribution, which propelled the team to an impressive eight-wicket victory over England at the Gabba. Smith expressed his joy regarding Neser's achievement of securing his first five-wicket haul in Test cricket.
After more than three years away from Test matches, Neser returned with impressive figures of 1-43 and 5-41, marking his first five-wicket haul as Australia dismissed England for 241 runs and successfully chased 65, taking a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.
"I’m feeling pretty relaxed now! It was an enjoyable day of cricket. The team put in a lot of effort. A solid partnership between Will Jacks and Ben Stokes was challenging, but once we broke it, we managed to set ourselves a chase of around 60 runs, which was satisfying," Smith commented.
He added, "Neser extended our batting depth today. What he achieved in both innings was extraordinary. He brings a unique style to our bowling attack, allowing us to advance the keeper closer to the stumps, which changes the dynamic. His bowling today was exceptional. He has been part of numerous tours, and I’m thrilled he’s achieved his first five-wicket haul," Smith stated post-match.
Further discussing Australia’s strong performance under the lights, he remarked, "The initial two days had equal conditions for both teams. Neither side got a fresh ball at night during the first innings."
"The game shifted when we lengthened our innings, with everyone contributing in double digits, even though no one managed to score big. The tail’s ability to bat for 50 overs and extend into the night, allowing us to bowl with a newer ball under lights, was crucial for our success," Smith said.
Player of the Match Mitchell Starc, who took eight wickets and scored 77 runs, emphasized Australia's success stemmed from batting deep and applying continuous pressure on England. "Two wins are fantastic. I couldn't ask for more. It was a hard-fought victory, and I’m pleased to be on the winning side. How's my body holding up? It takes a bit longer to recover in the mornings at this age, but I’m managing well," he shared.
"I’m still pushing myself to bowl at my best and hit the stumps consistently. Partnering with the bat was crucial, as we aimed to bowl with a hard pink ball later in the day. Batting longer alongside Scott Boland was key for us. We received our rewards later in the day. I’ll appreciate the extra day to rest and prepare for Adelaide," Starc concluded.
He praised Neser for his five-wicket haul at his home ground, noting, "We know this pitch can be tricky, and the pink ball tends to soften quickly. Our bowling unit performed excellently in both innings. Securing a lead in the first innings was essential. Michael Neser, performing in front of his family on his home ground, was phenomenal today."
