New Delhi, June 10 (NationPress) Since Pat Cummins took the reins as Australia’s Test captain, the team has achieved remarkable success in just over three years, clinching the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC) final. With their eyes set on retaining the WTC title against first-time finalists South Africa in what’s being termed the ‘Ultimate Test’ at Lord’s starting Wednesday, expectations are soaring for Cummins & Co.
Sanjay Bangar, the former all-rounder for India and ex-batting coach, asserts that if Australia successfully defends its WTC crown, it would highlight the players’ talent, thorough planning, and commitment to becoming the premier men’s Test team globally.
“This would hold great significance as the format is thoughtfully designed, making each Test match relevant,” Bangar noted during a virtual interaction with IANS on Tuesday.
“In the past, teams often knew mid-season how the championship was shaping up, with points determining the number one team at year’s end, sometimes diminishing the relevance of each match,” he elaborated.
“For Australia, winning consistently across various conditions and reaching the finals is a tremendous accomplishment. It underscores the careful planning by Cricket Australia for ICC events, positioning their players accordingly,” he added.
In contrast to Australia’s championship history, South Africa continues to seek a major tournament victory. The Proteas have reached the knockout stages of ICC events since 2023 but have often found themselves in the ‘so close, yet so far’ narrative.
Bangar pointed out that South Africa’s success in the 2025 WTC final hinges on how their top three batters – skipper Temba Bavuma, Aiden Markram, and Ryan Rickleton – confront the challenge of Australia’s formidable left-arm fast bowler, Mitchell Starc.
“The pivotal match-up will be Starc bowling to South Africa’s top order, particularly Bavuma and Markram, and how they navigate the new ball phase. If they can withstand this phase, it could balance the match significantly,” he concluded.
“Additionally, for South Africa’s middle order to post a substantial first-innings total, exceeding 350-400 runs in overseas matches is crucial for victory. How they counter Starc’s new ball threat is a match-up I’m eager to observe,” he wrapped up.
