Australia Regains Top Spot in WTC Standings After Adelaide Test; India Falls to Third

New Delhi, Dec 8 (NationPress) After a decisive ten-wicket triumph over India in the second Test at the Adelaide Oval, which leveled the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series at 1-1, Australia has ascended back to the top of the 2023-2025 ICC World Test Championship standings.

The team led by Pat Cummins holds a points percentage of 60.71, surpassing both South Africa and India in the championship rankings, marking their ninth victory in the current cycle.

Conversely, the significant defeat has caused Rohit Sharma-led India to drop to third place, with their points percentage now at 57.29, a decline from 61.11 following their 295-run win in Perth.

India is now required to secure victories in their remaining three Tests against Australia in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney to have a shot at qualifying for their third consecutive WTC final, scheduled to take place at Lord’s next year.

Meanwhile, South Africa is well-positioned, holding a points percentage of 59.26, and is currently engaged in a home Test against Sri Lanka in Gqeberha, where a victory could see them rise to the top of the standings.

During the third day of the day-night Test at the Adelaide Oval, skipper Pat Cummins excelled, claiming 5-57 in 14 overs, marking his 13th five-wicket haul in Tests, and dismissed India for a mere 175 in their second innings.

This left Australia needing just 19 runs to level the series, which they accomplished in just 3.2 overs, showcasing a remarkable comeback after their heavy defeat in the series opener in Perth.

The pink-ball Test at the Adelaide Oval also stands as the shortest Test match between Australia and India in terms of balls bowled, with only 1031 deliveries in total, concluding in under two hours on day three.
