Hyderabad, March 5 (NationPress) The Austrian women's hockey squad has arrived in Hyderabad in preparation for the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 Qualifiers in Telangana. This tournament will feature eight countries vying for three significant qualification spots for the highly anticipated event taking place in Belgium and the Netherlands this August.
Austria boasts a notable history in the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup, having participated in three of the initial four tournaments. However, their last qualification for this premier event was back in 1981.
Guided by their captain, Johanna Czech, Austria is set to compete in Pool A against England, Italy, and Korea, aiming to create history by securing a qualification spot for the first time in 45 years.
Expressing her enthusiasm about the tournament, the captain remarked, “This is our first visit to India, and we are thrilled to play high-quality hockey. Our preparation has been brief; we only managed one training session, but we are committed to giving our all. We will have additional training sessions here before our matches, and we are ready to leave everything on the pitch.”
Previously, the Italy women’s national hockey team also arrived in Hyderabad on Thursday.
The event is scheduled from March 8 to 14, featuring eight nations competing for three vital spots in the much-anticipated tournament in Belgium and the Netherlands later this year in August.
Italy is also placed in Pool A, where they will encounter England, Korea, and Austria. The European team has secured a spot in the FIH Hockey World Cup twice, first in 1976 and most recently in 2018, where they achieved their highest finish of ninth place.
Italy will commence their tournament journey with a match against England on March 8, followed by games against Austria and Korea on March 9 and 11, respectively.
