Madrid, April 12 (NationPress) FC Barcelona has surged ahead by nine points at the pinnacle of La Liga following a convincing 4-1 victory against Espanyol in the much-anticipated Catalan derby, coinciding with Real Madrid's 1-1 draw against Girona at home.

Ferran Torres initiated the scoring for Barcelona, aiming to bounce back from their recent UEFA Champions League loss to Atletico Madrid, with a powerful header from a corner just nine minutes into the match, thus ending his goal drought that had lasted since January 31. He increased Barcelona's advantage to two goals in the 25th minute, skillfully converting a pass delivered with the outside of Lamine Yamal's foot.

Torres narrowly missed out on achieving a hat-trick due to a marginal offside call against Eric Garcia in the second half. Shortly thereafter, Pol Lozano's effort from the edge of the penalty area briefly reignited Espanyol's hopes for a point, as reported by Xinhua.

Frenkie de Jong made his return from injury with just eight minutes remaining in the game. Four minutes later, Yamal secured the victory for Barcelona, racing onto a through ball from Marc Casado and elegantly finishing past Espanyol's goalkeeper, Marko Dmitrovic.

Just two minutes later, Marcus Rashford sealed the match at 4-1, volleying home after Barcelona caught Espanyol off guard during a counter-attack.

Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid, who triumphed over Barcelona earlier in the week, made extensive changes to their lineup for their encounter with Sevilla, resulting in a 2-1 defeat against a team positioned in the relegation zone.

Sevilla took the lead through Akor Adams' penalty, awarded for a foul by Dani Martinez, who was one of several players changed in the Atletico starting lineup.

Atletico managed to equalize with a goal from Javier Bonar, a B-team player making his first-team debut, but Nemanja Gudelj restored Sevilla's advantage with a powerful header in injury time, leaving Atletico unable to recover in the second half.

In other matches, Real Sociedad prepared for next weekend's Copa del Rey final by staging an impressive comeback in their Basque derby, ultimately drawing 3-3 with Alaves.

An own goal by Duje Caleta-Car allowed Alaves to take an early lead, but Luka Sucic quickly equalized. Ibrahim Diabate then put Alaves ahead once more in the 24th minute. Real Sociedad equalized again through a fortuitous goal when Benat Turrientes' shot rebounded off the post and into the net off Alaves' goalkeeper, Antonio Sivera.

Orri Oskarsson appeared to have scored the winner for Real Sociedad after Takefusa Kubo's assist, but Lucas Boye salvaged a point for Alaves with a late goal in stoppage time.

Elche managed to escape the relegation zone with a narrow 1-0 victory over Valencia, courtesy of Lucas Cepeda's goal in the 73rd minute.
