Buenos Aires, June 3 (NationPress) Boca Juniors has appointed Miguel Angel Russo as their new manager for the third time on Monday, just a fortnight ahead of the Argentine club's participation in the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.
At 69 years old, Russo steps in for Mariano Herron, who was serving as caretaker manager since April following the dismissal of Fernando Gago. Russo has previously led Boca Juniors to their sixth Copa Libertadores title during his first year as manager in 2007, and he returned for an 18-month period from 2020 to 2021.
In his initial press conference, Russo emphasized the importance of unity and commitment, stating, “We all have to be aligned with one idea and one approach. Boca deserves to play in it, for its greatness and its people.” He further expressed, “Boca is every day, every minute. That's how it is. It’s different from everything else.” He appreciates the unwavering support from Boca fans, acknowledging, “If this didn't make me happy, I wouldn't do it.”
Russo was available after resigning from his position as head coach of San Lorenzo in May.
His extensive managerial career spans 36 years, including tenures at notable clubs like Estudiantes, Universidad de Chile, Rosario Central, Velez Sarsfield, Racing, and Millonarios.
With the FIFA Club World Cup commencing on June 14, Russo's immediate goal is to prepare Boca Juniors for their opening match against Benfica, followed by matches against Auckland City and Bayern Munich in the group stage.
Boca president Juan Roman Riquelme expressed his optimism at a news conference, saying, “A manager who gave us the last Copa Libertadores and who is my friend is returning. I wish him a lot of success and happiness.”
Russo's return comes during a challenging period for Boca Juniors, who faced an early exit in the Copa Libertadores playoff round and were eliminated in the Apertura quarterfinals by Independiente.
