New Delhi, Oct 8 (NationPress) Former cricketer and coach Simon Katich has expressed that Scott Boland is likely to step in for the injured Australian captain Pat Cummins in the Ashes opener. Reports indicate that the regular skipper will be sidelined for the first Test in Perth on November 21 due to a lower back stress injury.
Cummins is anticipated to miss the Ashes opener in Perth, with concerns that he might also be unavailable for the entire Test series against England, as scans have shown that his back issue has not yet improved.
“I believe Scott Boland is the first choice if Cummins cannot play. There is no doubt about that, but it opens up a fantastic opportunity for some of the other young pace bowlers across the country,” Katich stated on SEN Afternoons.
Following Boland, Katich is considering Queensland’s Michael Neser, who has frequently been next in line. Additionally, Victoria’s Fergus O’Neill is also a strong contender after being named the 2024/25 Sheffield Shield player of the season.
“You certainly can't overlook Michael Neser, who has been outstanding for Queensland. Then there’s the young Victorian Fergus O'Neill, who had a brilliant stint in England earlier this year for Notts and has performed well for Victoria over the past few years. He’s only 24 and has significant potential,” he added.
Diving deeper into Australia’s pace options, Katich mentioned that selectors might want to evaluate South Australia’s Henry Thornton, highlighting his similar bowling style to Cummins.
“I reckon there might be a promising young player from New South Wales, now in South Australia, who has recently played for Australia A. If that’s any indicator of the selectors' mindset,” Katich explained.
“That’s Henry Thornton; he’s 28, but still relatively inexperienced. He’s played only seven first-class matches, but he has a knack for taking wickets, which is likely what they are after since we know Pat Cummins can change games by taking two or three wickets in quick succession.
“There are several players who will likely try to showcase their capabilities in the upcoming month to be the next choice, but I believe Scott Boland is the frontrunner if Cummins misses that first Test,” he said.
The absence of Cummins due to a back stress injury is a significant setback for Australia's ambitions of retaining the Ashes, which they have held since 2018.
