New Delhi, Aug 13 (NationPress) AFC Bournemouth has officially confirmed the acquisition of French centre-back Bafode Diakite from Ligue 1 club Lille OSC. The transfer fee is reported to be 30.3 million pounds with an additional 4.3 million in potential add-ons, making him the second most expensive signing in the club's history.
Diakite has immediately integrated into Andoni Iraola's squad, gearing up for their Premier League season opener against Liverpool on Friday evening.
“I’m really happy to be here and am eager to begin with the team. The coach has impressive ideas that will aid our performance in the Premier League. Being at this club presents me with a great chance to demonstrate how I can contribute to the team’s success,” stated Diakite.
“As a defender, I prefer to control the ball and engage in play, and I intend to exhibit my skills both with and without the ball. I will devote myself entirely to the team and hope for memorable moments together,” he added.
Diakite's football journey began at the age of seven with Toulouse ACF, and he joined their academy at 12. He made his senior debut for Toulouse in a Ligue 1 match against Reims at just 17 years old. After a nine-year tenure with his childhood club, he transferred to Lille in August 2022.
During the 2024/25 season, Diakite became a pivotal player for Lille, forming a formidable central defensive pairing with Alexsandro.
Versatile enough to play both centre-back and right-back, he is recognized for his physical strength, speed, and exceptional game awareness. Offensively, his aerial prowess during set pieces makes him a consistent threat.
Internationally, Diakite has represented France at various youth levels, including U16, U18, U19, and U21, but has yet to earn a senior cap.
This signing occurred a day after Paris Saint-Germain secured Ukrainian international Illia Zabarnyi from Bournemouth. Zabarnyi had joined Bournemouth in January 2023 and made 37 league appearances in the 2023–24 season, earning the title of fan-favorite Player of the Season.
His transfer marks Bournemouth's fourth significant defensive departure this summer, following the exits of Dean Huijsen to Real Madrid, Milos Kerkez to Liverpool, and goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, who signed with Arsenal.
