Is Captain Guehi Leaving Crystal Palace Next Year?

Synopsis

In a significant development, Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi has declared his intention to leave the club after refusing to sign a new contract. With interest from top European clubs, the decision poses a crucial question for Palace: will they sell him in January or risk losing him for free?

Key Takeaways

  • Palace faces a decision on whether to sell him in January.
  • Guehi has been a key player since joining from Chelsea.
  • Top clubs like Liverpool and Barcelona are interested.
  • His international future with England remains promising.

London, Oct 18 (NationPress) Marc Guehi, the captain of Crystal Palace, has notified the club of his decision not to extend his contract and plans to depart, as confirmed by manager Oliver Glasner. The 25-year-old defender from England has a contract that ends at the season's conclusion, and despite the club's desire to retain him, Guehi has opted for a new path.

“They proposed a new contract to Marc, but he responded, ‘No, I want to explore something different,’ which is understandable,” Glasner stated.

Crystal Palace must now decide whether to sell Guehi during the upcoming January transfer window or risk losing him without compensation next summer. Glasner acknowledged the sensitivity of the situation and mentioned that conversations are ongoing.

“We need to find a solution for this situation. (What) is the best approach to advance? Our discussions will focus on that,” he added.

Since joining Palace from Chelsea in 2021, Guehi has been a key player, making 167 appearances and earning a reputation as one of the most dependable centre-backs in the Premier League.

This summer, Guehi was on the verge of transferring to Liverpool, having passed a medical ahead of a reported £35 million move, but Palace withdrew from the deal on deadline day following the failure to secure Brighton defender Igor Julio.

Regardless of the uncertainty surrounding his future, Guehi has been a constant presence for Palace this season, participating in all 12 matches across various competitions and helping the team rise to sixth place in the Premier League.

Interest in the England international remains high, with reports indicating that Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich may compete with Liverpool for his signature in January.

Guehi earned his 26th cap for England during a 3-0 friendly victory over Wales this month and mentioned that there is “definitely an opportunity” to secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup squad, even if he remains at Palace for the entire season.
