Acapulco, Feb 25 (NationPress) World No. 5 Casper Ruud has successfully progressed to the second round of the Mexican Open after securing a 6-4, 6-3 win over Arthur Rinderknech.

The Norwegian has triumphed in seven of his last eight matches and will next face either Aleksandar Vukic or wildcard Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez in the upcoming round.

Ruud, seeded second in Acapulco, recently reached the final in Dallas and boasts a record of 14-4 at ATP 500 events dating back to last season, as per ATP statistics.

Initially, the match posed challenges as the Frenchman delivered two powerful winners, causing Ruud to falter with his reliable forehand, resulting in a lost service game.

However, Ruud managed to break his opponent’s serve three times out of nine opportunities, according to ATP Stats, and did not suffer another service loss after the opening game, concluding the match in one hour and 42 minutes.

The 26-year-old was a finalist in both Acapulco and Los Cabos during last year's tournaments. Ruud aims to take it a step further this year in pursuit of his first title of 2025.

In other matches, Tomas Machac defeated compatriot Jakub Mensik in three sets and will face German wildcard Daniel Altmaier, who came back from a set down to win against Miomir Kecmanovic.

Altmaier triumphed over the Serb with a score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to advance in the Mexican Open at the Arena GNP Seguros.

The Mexican Open has been recognized by players as the best tournament in its category on three occasions (2007, 2017, 2019). It has been held at Arena GNP Seguros since 2022 and transitioned to blue hard courts in 2014 after two decades on clay.
