India Championship 2026: Chouhan, Talwar shine on rain-hit opening day
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Denmark's Niklas Norgaard claimed the clubhouse lead with a scintillating six-under 66 on the rain-marred opening day of the US$ 4 million India Championship at the Delhi Golf Club on 15 October 2026, even as Indian duo Om Prakash Chouhan and Saptak Talwar delivered encouraging starts in the country's biggest professional golf event.
Chouhan, a multiple winner on the PGTI Tour this season, carded a composed four-under 68 — featuring six birdies and two bogeys — to sit tied fifth in the clubhouse and emerge as the best-placed Indian in the field. Talwar, the reigning PGTI Order of Merit leader, finished at one-under 71, underpinned by three birdies against two bogeys, and expressed confidence heading into the remainder of the tournament.
Weather Throws the Day Into Chaos
Overcast conditions in the morning gave way to a light drizzle and lightning threats, forcing organisers to halt play at 11 am local time. A heavy downpour followed, stretching the suspension to a total of four hours and fifty minutes before play eventually resumed at 4 pm. As a consequence, only the morning wave — comprising 72 players, roughly half the field — managed to complete their first-round cards on the day.
Chouhan's Day: Local Knowledge, a Chip-In, and a New Putter
Om Prakash Chouhan, 40, is a former PGTI Order of Merit champion, winner of 12 professional titles, and a veteran of the HotelPlanner Tour. He credited precision approach play as the foundation of his round, with most birdies set up by accurate iron shots onto firm greens. The highlight came at the sixth hole, where he chipped in from 15 yards for birdie. He also recovered superbly from the rough on the eighth to salvage another birdie.
'I'm very satisfied with my effort considering the conditions and the long stoppage that we had to endure. Before the rain, the greens were firm, and the ball was rolling out, so I had to think carefully about whether to attack the flags. After the rain, I could be more aggressive,' Chouhan said.
'I found a lot of fairways today, and that set up my second shots. My local knowledge and experience of playing at the Delhi Golf Club for so many years obviously helped. I changed my putter recently, and that reflected in my good putting today. I'm carrying my driver in the bag but don't really intend to use it,' he added. Currently ranked seventh on the PGTI Order of Merit, Chouhan will be a player to watch through the week.
Talwar Eyes a Strong Build-Up Through the Rounds
Saptak Talwar, who leads the PGTI Order of Merit standings this season, reflected positively on his opening effort despite leaving a few birdie opportunities out on the course. 'Felt like I was rolling the putts well. Just a couple of misreads here and there that I thought were good chances to make a couple of more birdies. But overall, I think I'm pleased with the start,' he said.
'I think I'm most excited about trying to build on one round after the other. If I can tidy up a few things around the greens, I feel I can look forward to a good week,' Talwar added.
Fleetwood, McIlroy Lurking; Other Indians Mid-Pack
Defending champion Tommy Fleetwood of England and World No. 2 Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland both carded two-under rounds, leaving themselves well within striking distance of the lead. Among the other Indians, Manu Gandas was one-under after one hole, Anirban Lahiri was even-par through five holes, and Khalin Joshi was even-par through three holes. Amardeep Malik and Kartik Singh were both even-par through one hole. Manoj S and Veer Ahlawat completed their rounds with scores of 73 and 74 respectively, while Shubhankar Sharma was two-over after five holes.
With the second wave yet to complete its first round, the leaderboard remains fluid — and India's home contingent will be hoping Chouhan and Talwar can carry their momentum deep into the week.
