New Delhi, Nov 26 (NationPress) India has officially secured the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with Amdavad (Ahmedabad) designated as the host city. This significant announcement was made during the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) General Assembly in Glasgow, Scotland, on Wednesday.

Ashwini Kumar, the Principal Secretary for Ports and Transport in Gujarat, mentioned that India’s preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games are being conducted with precision and confidence, supported by a robust team.

Shortly after delegates from 74 Commonwealth nations and territories endorsed India’s bid in Glasgow, Kumar expressed optimism that all major preparations would be finalized “by the conclusion of 2028 or early 2029,” highlighting that facilities would be operational ahead of schedule, aided by the hosting of the World Police and Fire Games in October 2029.

“We are extremely confident, and we have conducted thorough planning as a team. This initiative is spearheaded by our young and dynamic Deputy Chief Minister… We have the backing of our Honourable Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, our Union Sports Minister, Union Home Minister, and our Chief Minister, ensuring a dedicated team is behind this project,” he emphasized, revealing that funding and budgeting have been “exceptionally well planned.”

Kumar assured that India is committed to delivering a Games that will be cherished “for years ahead,” ensuring it is “sustainable… both financially and otherwise,” suitable for the event’s centenary and capable of transcending into the next century. His statements coincided with a historic day for the Commonwealth Sport Movement, as India—the most populous nation globally—was selected to host the prestigious 2030 Games, with Ahmedabad, Gujarat, as the central venue.

The announcement sparked immediate celebrations, with 20 Garba dancers and 30 Indian dhol drummers performing in the General Assembly Hall, providing a vibrant preview of the cultural richness that awaits athletes and fans in 2030.

Commonwealth Sport President Donald Rukare commended India’s achievement, stating, “This will be a momentous occasion for India to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030, and I firmly believe this event will be significant for the nation. I place my complete faith in the administration led by the Prime Minister, and I extend my best wishes to all my fellow citizens for this historic event.”

The Amdavad 2030 organizers will collaborate with Commonwealth Sport and international federations to finalize a program featuring 15–17 sports, aligned with the recent Sport Programme Review, with additional sports such as cricket T20, shooting, hockey, wrestling, judo, rugby sevens, and 3x3 basketball under consideration, along with the potential for two new sports proposed by the host.

Renowned Commonwealth champion swimmer Duncan Scott welcomed the decision, remarking, “The Commonwealth Games hold a special place in my career… I’m thrilled for Indian athletes who will experience this in 2030. For everyone else, we have a chance to broaden our horizons and savor the ambition and vibrancy of Amdavad and India. We anticipate handing over the Games to Amdavad in excellent condition after welcoming everyone to Glasgow next year.”

India had previously secured a total of 101 medals, including 38 gold medals, during the 2010 CWG in New Delhi, with 30 medals coming from shooting alone. In the 2022 edition, India earned 61 medals, comprising 22 gold. Notably, shooting was excluded from the Birmingham edition.
