Bengaluru, June 1 (NationPress) - As the Blue Tigresses took on Uzbekistan in the inaugural match of two FIFA Women’s International Friendlies, three emerging talents experienced the thrill of international football at its pinnacle – Manisha Naik, Malavika P, and Priyadharshini Selladurai.
While both Manisha and Malavika were part of the starting lineup for their India debuts, Priyadharshini earned her first cap after stepping in for Dangmei Grace in the 74th minute.
For Manisha Naik, May 30 will remain a date to remember. “Receiving the call-up made me feel incredibly happy and proud. It seemed surreal. Yet, I felt nervous about how I'd perform in my debut match. Fortunately, the senior players provided valuable support to help me acclimate,” she shared.
Her journey has been both steady and remarkable – scoring seven goals for Sports Odisha in the 2022–23 Odisha Women’s League, followed by an impressive season with Nita FA in the 2024–25 IWL, where she achieved a brace against HOPS FC.
Even though India did not secure a victory in her debut, Manisha maintained a positive outlook. “We gave our best, but the match didn’t turn in our favor. Nevertheless, we’ll return stronger. We’ve observed Uzbekistan’s play style and will leverage that experience to better prepare for the next match,” she noted.
At just 21 years old, Malavika P from Kasargod, Kerala, is celebrated for her speed and creativity on the wing. Her football journey has seen a consistent ascent. She progressed from sub-junior levels to becoming recognized as the Best Female Player of 2024 in Kerala by the Kerala Football Association, eventually joining Sethu FC, where she has been pivotal in the 2024-25 season.
“I faced criticism from people in my village for pursuing football, but my mother was my unwavering support. She’s my strength, along with my coach and family, who have been my backbone, allowing me to reach this point,” she expressed.
Reflecting on her international debut, she stated, “It’s my first match for India, and honestly, I can’t find the words to describe this feeling. I’m just overjoyed and proud. It feels like a dream realized. We played well, but football can be unpredictable. What’s vital now is that we come back even stronger.”
When Priyadharshini Selladurai donned the Indian jersey for the first time, it represented more than just a personal achievement; it was a moment of pride for her village, family, and every young girl with dreams. The 22-year-old midfielder from Savalakaran village in Tiruchirappalli became the first player from her community to represent India at the senior level.
“It’s thrilling to see my dream materializing. I’ve eagerly awaited the opportunity to wear the India jersey and represent my country,” she remarked. Her football journey began in sixth grade when her school coach, V. Muthukumar, encouraged her to pursue the sport despite societal barriers.
Having already been a top scorer in the 2024 Kerala State League, a Khelo India representative for Tamil Nadu, and part of the IWL runners-up team with Gokulam Kerala, Priyadharshini is determined to inspire future generations. “I will strive diligently to represent the country. I hope my story motivates more girls back home to chase their dreams as well,” she affirmed.
