Guwahati, Sep 29 (NationPress) As India gears up for its opening match in the Women’s ODI World Cup against co-hosts Sri Lanka, senior off-spin bowling all-rounder Deepti Sharma highlighted the significance of a strong start, noting that it is a crucial factor in determining the direction of the tournament for the team.
Historically, India has yet to claim the Women’s ODI World Cup title, with their highest achievement being as runners-up in 2005 and 2017. The team, under the leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur, is set to embark on its quest for a first senior World Cup title when they face Sri Lanka at the ACA Stadium on Tuesday.
“The first match is always vital as it sets the tone for the tournament. We recently faced Sri Lanka, and we are well aware of their batting and bowling capabilities. With this knowledge, we are preparing ourselves accordingly,” Deepti stated on JioStar.
In their last ODI encounter, India triumphed over Sri Lanka to secure victory in the tri-series held in Colombo earlier this year. Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana discussed strategies on how the team could tackle the challenges posed by Sri Lanka, led by Chamari Athapaththu.
“Facing Sri Lanka will be our first match, and there will naturally be expectations surrounding it. However, our priority is to concentrate on our processes and avoid distractions from outside pressure. We have performed well in the last 12 months, and it’s essential to trust ourselves and our skills,” she remarked.
India last hosted the Women’s ODI World Cup in 2013, which was won by Australia. The nation previously hosted this prestigious event in 1978 and 1997. The semifinals for the upcoming 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup are scheduled for October 29 and 30, with the final taking place on November 2.
