New Delhi, March 25 (NationPress) The iconic cricketer MS Dhoni has expressed that Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium holds a special significance for him, alongside the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) home ground, Chepauk. Dhoni captained the Indian team to its second ICC ODI World Cup victory in 2011 at Wankhede after a long 28-year wait. He has been a part of CSK since IPL's inception in 2008, with the MA Chidambaram Stadium, known as Chepauk, feeling like a second home for the wicketkeeper-batter.
"I wouldn't claim to have a second favourite because we receive similar warm receptions almost everywhere. However, I have a fondness for Mumbai because of the warm welcome we received in 2007 after winning the T20 World Cup. The memories from the 2011 final also make it special, thus it holds a unique place in my heart," Dhoni shared during an appearance on JioHotstar's "The MS Dhoni Experience".
The 43-year-old cricketer stated that it’s challenging to choose just one stadium in India, yet Chepauk stands out as the crowd is incredibly passionate and loud with their whistles. Dhoni has set the record for the most sixes at Chepauk, hitting 74 in 70 matches, along with accumulating 1,469 runs at an impressive strike rate of 145.15, including 93 boundaries.
"Additionally, whether playing in Bangalore or Kolkata, the crowds are fantastic and create a vibrant atmosphere. In Ahmedabad, it's similar with a large crowd capacity. It becomes tough to choose a favorite as every crowd supports their teams wholeheartedly, but Chepauk is remarkable due to the loudness of their whistles," he added.
The wicketkeeper-batter also reflected on the overwhelming support he receives from fans in the IPL, describing their affection as a heartfelt 'thank you' for his contributions to the sport.
"I always view it as a huge ‘thank you’ from the fans. During the remaining years of my career, it's their way of expressing gratitude for everything I've done, which is truly wonderful. In the realm of sports, receiving appreciation from fans is invaluable. Cricket in India is unparalleled for this experience.
"Being part of the Indian cricket team has been one of the greatest honors. Although I'm no longer playing international cricket, the IPL is the next best opportunity. Every time I step onto the field, there's an exciting atmosphere as fans eagerly anticipate my performance, even when I'm playing against their favorite team. It's an incredible feeling," Dhoni remarked.
Last year, when Dhoni stepped in to bat against the Lucknow Super Giants at Ekana Stadium, the noise level reached an astonishing 95 decibels; exposure to such levels for just 10 minutes can result in temporary hearing loss.
