Emami Group on Tuesday, 25 August formally concluded its role as an investor in East Bengal Football Club (EBFC), transferring all its shares and voting rights back to the club. The conglomerate confirmed it will remain associated with the Kolkata giants as a sponsor — a move that comes just two days after East Bengal ended a 22-year drought by claiming a record-equalling 17th Durand Cup title.

The Investment Exit

Emami had entered into an agreement with EBFC in 2022, acquiring a 77 per cent stake in the club and taking on investment and management responsibilities. On Tuesday, the group transferred those shares and voting rights back to East Bengal, effectively stepping away from governance while preserving its commercial relationship through sponsorship.

'While stepping away from its investment and management role, it will continue its association with East Bengal Club as a sponsor, supporting the Club and its ongoing sporting ambitions,' Emami said in a release. The group added: 'The Group remains proud of its association with East Bengal and wishes the Club, its players, officials, and supporters continued success in the seasons ahead.'

Historic Durand Cup Final

The exit follows a landmark moment for East Bengal. On 23 August, the red-and-gold brigade dismantled arch-rivals Mohun Bagan 4-1 in the Durand Cup final, their first triumph in the competition since 2004 — a gap of 22 years. The result also levelled the all-time Durand Cup tally between the two Kolkata clubs at 17 titles each in the tournament's 135-year history.

Edmund Lalrindika was the standout performer, completing a hat-trick to finish the match with three goals. Captain Mohammed Rashid was instrumental throughout, combining with Bipin Singh for the opener in the 10th minute — Bipin finishing with a left-footed strike from inside the box past goalkeeper Vishal Kaith.

How the Final Unfolded

Two minutes after Bipin's opener, Lalrindika struck from roughly 20 yards on the counter-attack; the ball deflected off Kaith and crossed the line to make it 2-0. Lalrindika added his second in the 22nd minute, combining with Hardik Bhatt and Daniel Ramirez before rounding the keeper to slot into an empty net.

Manvir Singh pulled one back for Mohun Bagan in the 33rd minute, but East Bengal immediately reasserted control. Rashid's teasing cross to the far post was met by Jay Gupta, who squared it for Lalrindika to complete his hat-trick in the 44th minute. East Bengal held firm after the break, denying Mohun Bagan any realistic chance of a comeback.

What the Exit Signals

Emami's departure from the investor role raises questions about the club's financial structure going forward, even as the on-field momentum is at its strongest in over two decades. Notably, this is not a complete severance — the sponsorship commitment signals that Emami retains reputational interest in East Bengal's success. The club's leadership will now need to chart a new ownership or investment path to sustain the competitive squad that delivered Sunday's triumph.
