New Delhi, Dec 9 (NationPress) Former Australian wicketkeeper Ian Healy voiced his frustration over England's performance in the ongoing Ashes series, labeling it as deflating. He pointed out that insufficient preparation for Australian conditions has led to the hosts being down 2-nil in the series.
After a defeat in the opening match in Perth, England's situation worsened in Brisbane, where Australia secured an easy victory, establishing a daunting 2-0 lead with a mere target of 65 runs.
“This has been a very deflating performance,” Healy shared with SEN. “Before the series, we had a lot of optimism. We anticipated a close Ashes series (in Australia), something we have been yearning for since the 1960s.
“England has faced a monumental failure; they have misjudged the entire scenario. It’s astonishing how so many individuals in decision-making roles within English Cricket could let such a flawed itinerary be approved.
“They have nothing to show because they haven’t been adequately training. Their fitness levels are below par, bowlers aren’t match-fit, and batsmen haven’t secured enough substantial runs recently. They appear unprepared and not putting in enough effort. It’s disappointing to witness such a farce unfold,” he added.
On the other hand, England's head coach Brendon McCullum mentioned that his team had over-trained before their heavy eight-wicket loss to Australia in the second Ashes Test. He emphasized that England needs to be at their very best in all areas to compete effectively against Australia in the upcoming matches in Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney.
As England heads into the third Test in Adelaide, beginning December 17, they have suffered a significant setback, losing fast bowler Mark Wood for the remainder of the Ashes due to a knee injury sustained during the first Test in Perth.
