Tomas Martin Etcheverry Secures His First ATP Title in Rio
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Rio de Janeiro, Feb 23 (NationPress) Tomas Martin Etcheverry has achieved a significant milestone by winning his first ATP Tour title at the Rio Open, defeating Alejandro Tabilo with scores of 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-4.
Due to Saturday's rain delaying his semi-final match, the Argentine demonstrated resilience by competing in two matches on Sunday (local time) to secure the ATP 500 title.
“This feels like a dream come true. I’ve been aiming for my first title for quite some time, and the hard work with my team has finally paid off,” expressed Etcheverry, who had faced defeat in three previous ATP Tour finals.
“I focused on giving my all. It was the final match of the tournament, and I pushed myself to the limit; ultimately, I was rewarded,” he added.
Initially trailing Tabilo 3-6, 1-3, Etcheverry seemed exhausted, likely due to a strenuous three-set semi-final against Vit Kopriva earlier that day. However, the 26-year-old, who narrowly missed his first tour-level title in Lyon in May 2024, tapped into his reserves to achieve this career landmark, as reported by ATP.
Etcheverry, who celebrated his 100th tour-level match victory on Friday, had previously triumphed over Tabilo in the Buenos Aires quarter-finals, extending his ATP Head-to-Head record to 2-0. Tabilo was looking to secure his fourth tour-level title and his first at the ATP 500 level.
With this victory, Etcheverry ascended 18 spots to No. 33 in the ATP Live Rankings, marking his return to the Top 40 for the first time since last February.
In a separate event, Brazilian doubles pair Joao Fonseca and Felipe Melo triumphed over Constantin Frantzen from Germany and Robin Haase from Belgium in the men’s doubles final with a scoreline of 4-6, 6-3, 10-8.
This victory marked Fonseca's first home title, while Melo celebrated his second consecutive title.
