The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has announced the creation of the FIH Youth Hockey5s World Cup, with the inaugural edition scheduled to take place in Ismailia, Egypt, from 7 to 12 December 2026. The new tournament is designed to provide the world's most promising young players a meaningful international competitive pathway in the shorter Hockey5s format.

Why the Tournament Was Created

The genesis of the event lies in a gap left by the Youth Olympic Games. Following the postponement of the 2022 Youth Olympic Games due to the COVID-19 pandemic, hockey was subsequently designated a non-medal Engagement Sport at the Youth Olympic Games Dakar 2026. According to the FIH, this sequence of decisions prompted the federation to establish a dedicated global competition to ensure young athletes retain a credible international stage.

This is the first time the FIH has created a standalone youth world championship for the Hockey5s format — a fast-paced, five-a-side variant of the sport intended to broaden hockey's appeal and accessibility.

Beyond Competition: Development at the Core

The tournament is structured around what the FIH describes as an 'athlete-first philosophy.' From 7 to 9 December 2026, before competitive play begins, all athletes and team staff will participate in two dedicated development programmes drawn from the Youth Olympic Games educational framework.

The Athlete Talent Camp will cover hockey skills and tactics, Olympic values, athlete wellbeing, and long-term athlete development. Running concurrently throughout the tournament, the Youth Leadership Camp will offer young team officials and umpires structured leadership and officiating experience. The FIH has framed the event as more than a sporting contest — positioning it as a platform to develop future leaders, officials, and role models within the sport.

Egypt's Role and Africa's Growing Stature

The decision to host the inaugural edition in Egypt carries strategic significance for the FIH. The federation stated that the choice reflects Africa's expanding role in global hockey development and the continent's demonstrated capacity to deliver world-class international events. Hosting the first edition in an emerging hockey market is also expected to generate a lasting legacy by inspiring greater youth participation across Africa and other developing hockey regions.

Notably, Egypt has steadily grown its hockey infrastructure in recent years, and the selection of Ismailia — a city with established sporting facilities — signals the federation's confidence in the host nation's organisational capability.
