Johor Bahru, Oct 10 (NationPress) As the Indian Junior Men’s Hockey Team gears up for the 13th edition of the Sultan of Johor Cup, there is a palpable sense of optimism and resolve within the squad. Coach PR Sreejesh emphasized that the team’s primary goal is to execute a fearless style of hockey.

This esteemed tournament, set to unfold in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, from October 11 to 18, sees India striving to regain their top spot and preserve their illustrious history in this competition.

India ranks as the second most triumphant team in the Sultan of Johor Cup's history, having clinched the title three times (2013, 2014, and 2022). Only Great Britain has secured the trophy more frequently, with four titles. The Indian junior men’s team has also garnered four Silver medals (2012, 2015, 2018, 2019) and two Bronze medals (2023 and 2024), showcasing their remarkable consistency and prowess in this prestigious junior event.

In anticipation of the tournament, coach PR Sreejesh remarked, “The Sultan of Johor Cup has always held a special place for us—it’s where many of our current senior players made their debut. It offers young athletes an ideal platform to challenge themselves against the best globally and grasp what it takes to perform consistently on the international stage.”

“Our preparations have centered on cultivating a well-rounded team—one that blends structure with creativity, and discipline with aggression. The boys have trained with exceptional intensity over the past weeks, and there’s a robust sense of purpose among the group. This tournament will also serve as an excellent opportunity to gear up for the Junior World Cup later this year. Competing against formidable teams will provide the players with invaluable experience and a true feel for top-level competition,” he added.

“We hold every opponent in high regard, but our emphasis is on playing our unique brand of hockey—fast, fearless, and intelligent. The team understands the legacy India holds in this tournament, and they are resolute in their aim to uphold that tradition and strive for nothing less than victory,” Sreejesh concluded.

In this upcoming edition, India will kick off their campaign against Great Britain on October 11, promising an exhilarating encounter between two of the tournament's most successful teams.

India will subsequently face New Zealand (October 12), followed by matches against Pakistan (October 14), Australia (October 15), and hosts Malaysia (October 17).

The top two teams at the conclusion of the round-robin phase will compete for the title in the Final on October 18.
