Taylor Fritz survived a match point to advance to the semifinals of the Terra Wortmann Open in Halle, Germany on Friday, 19 June, defeating Ben Shelton 6-7(5), 7-6(8), 7-6(3) in a serve-dominated contest lasting just under two hours and fifty minutes. Top seed Alexander Zverev also progressed, extending his winning streak to 10 matches to set up a highly anticipated semifinal showdown between the two.

How Fritz Survived the Shelton Test

The match featured no breaks of serve throughout, underscoring the grass-court firepower both players brought to the contest. Fritz delivered 24 aces and saved all four break-point opportunities he faced, while Shelton struck 15 aces without facing a single break-point chance. The pivotal moment came in the second-set tie-break, when Fritz stood just one point from defeat at 6-7 down before his opponent's forehand sailed wide.

Fritz then steadied, held serve comfortably, and closed out the second set with a dominant 196 mph first serve. He capitalised on Shelton's unforced errors to clinch the deciding tie-break 7-3.

Fritz Breaks His Shelton Hoodoo

The win ended a painful sequence for the American. Shelton had beaten Fritz in the Dallas Open final in February 2026 and again in the Stuttgart championship match just the previous week. Speaking on court after the victory, Fritz expressed undisguised relief.

'I do not want to experience losing a match to Shelton again,' Fritz said. 'It just happened with his chances being excellent in the other two matches that he won and my opportunities being even better here; I just put it into the back of my mind to capitalise on big moments, and thankfully, I could go through.'

Notably, this was also Fritz's first win over a top-10 player since the ATP Finals in November, when he defeated Lorenzo Musetti. It is his fifth victory at the Halle tournament overall, having earlier beaten former world champion Stan Wawrinka and Italian Luca Nardi in earlier rounds.

Zverev Rolls Into Semis on 10-Match Streak

Alexander Zverev, the 2021 Halle champion, overcame Belgian wildcard Raphael Collignon in a serve-heavy quarterfinal, winning 7-6(10), 7-6(2). The German, who claimed his maiden Grand Slam title at Roland Garros earlier this year, attributed his current form to the confidence that victory brought.

'My performance has been on a rise for some weeks, since Roland Garros, which I have won as my career's first Grand Slam, and now I have 10 wins under my belt and leading with the ATP Tour, so it is all going very well,' Zverev said.

Zverev acknowledged the challenge ahead, noting that Fritz holds a 9-5 head-to-head advantage over him. 'Last year, it was difficult for me against Fritz, and I was also struggling. However, I feel as if my form is much better than then. But for that to really pay off will be difficult in my semifinal against Fritz due to his dominance over me in matches,' he added.
