Glamorgan Secures Asitha Fernando for Initial Seven Matches of County Championship 2025

Cardiff, Dec 20 (NationPress) Glamorgan County Cricket Club has officially secured the services of Sri Lanka's pace bowler Asitha Fernando for the initial seven matches of the 2025 County Championship season, contingent upon receiving a No-Objection Certificate from Sri Lanka Cricket. Fernando, who made his Test debut against South Africa in January 2021, has participated in 21 Tests, where he has achieved 72 wickets. Additionally, he has taken 13 dismissals in 15 One Day Internationals.
In his most recent performance in August 2024, Fernando accomplished his second five-wicket haul (5-102) during the second Test against England at Lord’s, making him the second Sri Lankan bowler after Rumesh Ratnayake to be recorded on the Lord’s Honours Board. He subsequently claimed 17 wickets over three matches, averaging 24.64.
Reflecting on his transition to Glamorgan, Fernando expressed: “I wish to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Glamorgan Cricket for this opportunity. I am incredibly excited to join Glamorgan and return to the County Cricket scene this year. My previous stint significantly enhanced my game. I am eager to play alongside Mason, Colin, and the entire Glamorgan team, and I aspire to contribute my utmost during the upcoming season.”
Mark Wallace, Glamorgan's Director of Cricket, commented: “We’re thrilled to welcome a bowler of Asitha’s caliber to Sophia Gardens for the commencement of the 2025 season. Asitha possesses valuable experience in UK conditions, having played County Cricket before and performed admirably in Sri Lanka’s series against England last summer.
“We eagerly anticipate Asitha taking the field for Glamorgan as the first Sri Lankan player to represent the club,” he added.
