Ahmedabad, Feb 20 (NationPress) Gujarat spinner Ravi Bishnoi had to leave the pitch due to a concussion during the Ranji Trophy semi-final against Kerala on Thursday. In his place, medium-pacer Hemang Patel was introduced, leading to debates regarding the interpretation of the 'like-for-like' substitution rule.
Bishnoi, who had previously taken the wicket of Kerala opener Rohan Kunnummal, sustained an injury while trying to field a ball at point. In the process of diving, the ball bounced off his hand and hit his face. He was promptly taken off for medical evaluation and did not return to the game.
When Hemang came in to bat at No. 5 following the out of opener Priyank Panchal, Kerala’s spinner Jalaj Saxena was seen engaging in a lively discussion with the umpires regarding the replacement of a spinner with a seamer.
Nevertheless, with no other viable alternatives available, Gujarat’s choice was accepted, and Hemang played a vital role, scoring a steady 27 off 41 balls to keep Gujarat competitive for the first-innings advantage.
Earlier, Kerala had established an imposing first-innings total of 457, bolstered by a magnificent unbeaten 177 from wicketkeeper-batter Mohammed Azharuddeen. His performance was instrumental in setting a challenging score for Gujarat.
In response, Gujarat made a strong comeback. Senior opener Priyank Panchal spearheaded the effort with an impressive 148, forming a significant 131-run opening partnership with young player Aarya Desai.
The concussion rule had previously ignited discussion during the recent T20I series between India and England when pacer Harshit Rana substituted for all-rounder Shivam Dube.
