Gukesh, the Newly Crowned World Chess Champion, Receives a Hero's Welcome in Chennai

Chennai, Dec 16 (NationPress) The youngest World Chess Champion, 18-year-old Gukesh D, was greeted with an enthusiastic reception from fans at the Chennai International Airport on Monday following his triumphant return from Singapore, where he outperformed the reigning champion Ding Liren of China in the final of the World Chess Championship.
Gukesh has now become only the second Indian to reach this remarkable achievement, following the legendary Viswanathan Anand.
His arrival was a vibrant celebration, featuring cheering crowds, traditional dancers, and students from Velammal Vidyalaya, a school famous for cultivating chess champions. Officials from the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) and the All India Chess Federation (AICF) were present to pay tribute to Gukesh, who was visibly touched by the warm welcome.
“I am truly delighted to be here. I can feel the support and understand what it signifies for India. You all are amazing - your enthusiasm has energized me,” Gukesh expressed while addressing the media outside the airport.
His victory in Singapore was nothing less than spectacular. He triumphed over Liren in a gripping 14-game match that concluded on December 12. The pivotal moment arrived in Game 14, when Liren made a critical mistake in the endgame, allowing Gukesh to claim the title and carve his name in history as the 18th undisputed World Chess Champion.
What makes Gukesh’s achievement even more extraordinary is that he shattered records by becoming the youngest World Chess Champion, eclipsing the legendary Garry Kasparov.
As Gukesh exited the airport, he was celebrated with garlands and cheers. A specially designed vehicle adorned with his images and the slogan “18 at 18” awaited to take him home. SDAT officials honored him with a shawl, and fans displayed banners to celebrate the young champion's remarkable accomplishment.
