How Did Guntas Sandhu Place T-20th While Ananyaa Sood Finished T-42 at WAAP Golf?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Wellington, Feb 15 (NationPress) Guntas Sandhu faced challenging gusts of wind and recorded a score of 5-over 77 on a day when scoring proved to be extremely tough at the Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific (WAAP). This performance brought her total to 4-over for the four-day event, securing her a Tied-20th position, the highest among Indian participants.
Her fellow teammate Ananyaa Sood, who scored 82, also faced difficulties, concluding with a total of 14-over which placed her at T-42.
The championship was claimed by Korea’s Yunseo Yang, who overcame a challenge from compatriot Soomin Oh, marking her as the first Korean winner of the Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific (WAAP).
Despite the strong southerly winds that disrupted many players, the 18-year-old Yang finished with a remarkable three-under-par 69 at Royal Wellington, the best round on a day where only three players managed to go sub-par.
With an impressive 72-hole aggregate of 16-under 272, Yang concluded the tournament eight strokes ahead of Oh, matching the WAAP's record winning margin previously set by Japan’s Yuka Yasuda in 2019. Notably, she is also the first player to win the championship while maintaining the solo lead throughout all four rounds.
Yang had previously tied for fourth place in last year's WAAP held in Vietnam.
Her victory grants her exemptions for three major championships in 2026 – the AIG Women’s Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes, The Amundi Evian Championship in France, and the Chevron Championship in the United States, along with several prestigious amateur competitions.
This triumph ended Korea's prolonged absence from victory in this eminent women’s amateur championship, as previous contenders Minsol Kim (2023), Hyosong Lee (2024), and Oh last year all finished in second place.
