Bhubaneswar, March 25 (NationPress) Gurvindervir Singh, a talented 26-year-old international sprinter from Punjab, exhibited remarkable determination as he clinched the men's 60m title on the concluding day of the inaugural National Indoor Athletics Championships held at the Indoor Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday.

In a dramatic 60m final that saw three false starts leading to a reduced field of five athletes, Gurvindervir Singh maintained his composure to explode off the blocks and finish with a time of 6.60 seconds, securing the gold medal. This winning time surpassed the previous national record of 6.67 seconds for the 60m indoor event, which was established by VK Elakkiadasan in 2022.

“This marks a promising start to the 2026 season. I aim to build on this momentum for my outdoor races,” reflected the champion sprinter after achieving a national indoor record in his season's opener. Gurvindervir Singh represented Reliance during this competition.

The men's 60m race was highly anticipated, but unfortunate false starts led to the disqualification of Animesh Kujur, the defending national outdoor champion and a favorite to win.

Joining him on the sidelines due to false starts were Odisha’s Dondapti Mrutyam Jayaram and Karnataka’s Nehal Sagar. In the women’s 60m dash, Maharashtra’s 22-year-old Harita Bhandra emerged victorious with a time of 7.32 seconds.
