Perth, Nov 15 (NationPress) Just days ahead of the inaugural Ashes Test against England at Perth Stadium, Australia faces a significant setback as seasoned fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has been sidelined due to a hamstring strain.
Hazlewood sustained his injury during the New South Wales Sheffield Shield match versus Victoria at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Wednesday. Although initial scans appeared clear, Cricket Australia (CA) announced on Saturday that subsequent imaging confirmed the presence of a hamstring strain for Hazlewood.
“Josh Hazlewood underwent follow-up imaging today, which has verified a hamstring strain injury. The initial scans on Wednesday did not show any muscle strain; however, the latest imaging has confirmed the injury,” CA stated.
“Early imaging can sometimes underestimate mild muscle injuries. Consequently, Hazlewood will not be traveling to Perth and is officially ruled out,” added CA in their announcement.
In light of Hazlewood's absence, Michael Neser has been summoned to join Australia’s squad for the first Ashes Test, serving as a replacement for Hazlewood and Sean Abbott, who also encountered a hamstring strain during the same NSW-Victoria Sheffield Shield match.
All-rounder Neser, who has two Test appearances under his belt, made his debut against England at the Adelaide Oval in 2021. Hazlewood’s injury leaves Australia scrambling for adequate fast bowling options in their lineup for Perth, particularly since captain Pat Cummins has already been ruled out due to a lower back issue.
Currently, left-arm fast bowler Mitchell Starc is the only fully fit first-choice fast bowler in the Australian squad, followed by seamer Scott Boland. The significant loss of Hazlewood may prompt Australia to consider fielding both fast-bowling all-rounders Cameron Green and Beau Webster.
The injuries to Cummins, Abbott, and Hazlewood also pave the way for uncapped pacer Brendan Doggett, who could potentially make a surprising Test debut in Perth. Doggett has achieved two five-wicket hauls since recovering from a hamstring injury while playing for South Australia.
