New Delhi, Feb 27 (NationPress) Australian cricket legend Ian Healy has cautioned that the focus on Matthew Kuhnemann’s bowling action may persist, even though the International Cricket Council (ICC) has cleared him.
Kuhnemann was flagged for an illegal bowling action during the second Test against Sri Lanka last month, but the governing body of world cricket announced on Wednesday that his action is now considered legal, allowing the left-arm spinner to continue competing at the international level.
“If you attend a cricket match next year and Kuhnemann is on the bowling end, what are you going to observe? That’s the lingering concern; everyone will be watching,” Healy stated during an appearance on SENQ Breakfast.
Kuhnemann’s bowling action was reported amid Australia’s 2-0 Test series triumph over Sri Lanka, where he emerged as the top wicket-taker with 16 dismissals. The 28-year-old underwent an independent assessment at the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane, confirming that his elbow extension for all deliveries remained within the permissible 15-degree tolerance set by the ICC’s Illegal Bowling Regulations.
“You are allowed a 15-degree straightening. Your entire arm can bend as much as needed in bowling, but it cannot straighten beyond 15 degrees. They managed the situation effectively, with a maximum turnaround of two weeks. He is eligible to participate in international cricket again,” Healy added.
Following the validation of his bowling action, Kuhnemann expressed his relief, stating he never doubted his technique but valued the clarity of the process.
“I am extremely thankful for the support from my family, friends, and teammates, as well as Cricket Australia for standing by me throughout this journey. I’ve always had confidence in my bowling action and aim to enhance the craft of spin bowling in various conditions.
I found the process to be fair and appreciated the professional approach in which the testing was explained and executed. I look forward to concluding the season with Tasmania once my thumb is fully healed and then preparing off the field,” Kuhnemann remarked.
