HIL 2024-25: Dynamic UP Rudras Triumph 3-1 Over Delhi SG Pipers

Rourkela, Jan 11 (NationPress) UP Rudras secured a vital 3-1 victory against Delhi SG Pipers during the ongoing Men's Hockey India League (HIL) 2024-25 at the Birsa Munda Stadium on Saturday. Goals from Floris Wortelboer (30'), Kane Russell (43'), and Tanguy Cosyns (54') allowed them to earn three points and rise to No.2 on the points table, while Jake Whetton (29') accounted for the solitary goal for Delhi SG Pipers, who are still seeking their first outright win in the league.

The UP Rudras displayed a stronger team dynamic on paper as they commenced the quarter. They generated more circle entries with a cohesive attack and demonstrated superior ball possession compared to their rivals.

In the opening quarter, they earned the match's first Penalty Corner (PC), but the opportunity was squandered when Kane Russell collaborated with Sam Ward for a variation on the PC, only for Ward to misconnect and send his shot wide. The subsequent minutes saw the Rudras maintain dominance, with local talent Sudeep Chirmako showcasing impressive attacking prowess as he penetrated the striking circle multiple times. However, the quarter concluded with a 0-0 score.

The second quarter started with the Rudras creating another promising opportunity to take a 1-0 lead, again through a PC. Unfortunately, the drag-flick went directly to the goalkeeper. Even though Lalit Upadhyay managed to collect the rebound, his shot was off-target. While the Rudras continued to press offensively, their defense faltered in the 29th minute, allowing the Delhi SG Pipers to net the first goal of the match.

Their captain, Jake Whetton, executed a skillful maneuver at the top of the circle, dodging defenders to attempt an ambitious shot on goal. Their joy was short-lived, however, as Floris Wortelboer equalized just a minute later. The Rudras took the lead in the 43rd minute when they were awarded another PC, with Kane Russell delivering a powerful flick to secure a 2-1 advantage.

With only a one-goal lead, the Rudras had to battle fiercely to maintain their position in the final quarter. Meanwhile, the Delhi SG Pipers sought an equalizer. Six minutes into the quarter, young player Manjeet took a daring shot on goal but missed, and shortly after, they earned a PC that also failed to convert into a goal.

The Rudras found breathing room when they scored their third goal in the 54th minute, thanks to Tanguy Cosyns. His execution of the PC was flawless, putting his team in a commanding position.

With under five minutes left on the clock, the Delhi SG Pipers earned a PC but failed to capitalize. The Rudras held firm defensively to clinch a 3-1 victory and ascend to No.2 on the points table, trailing only the Tamil Nadu Dragons. This marked their third outright win from five matches played thus far.

Looking ahead in the HIL, the Hyderabad Toofans are set to face the Vedanta Kalinga Lancers on Sunday. The women's matches will kick off on the same day, featuring a contest between Delhi SG Pipers and the Odisha Warriors.
