New Delhi, Nov 14 (NationPress) Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen expressed his support for the selection of spinner Kuldeep Yadav in India’s lineup for the initial Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens this Friday.
Kuldeep, participating in his fourth Test this year, retained his spot in the team for the series opener in Kolkata. He joined experienced all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, and Axar Patel to strengthen the spin department.
“I love that Kuldeep is playing Tests,” Pietersen shared on X.
Previously, Kuldeep was part of India’s squad during the two-match home Test series against the West Indies last month, where he took 12 wickets across four innings.
Earlier this month, he was released from India’s T20I team against Australia after three games to focus on the Tests against South Africa. He also made the India A squad for their second unofficial Test against South Africa A held in Bengaluru, where he managed to take only one wicket in a match that ended with a five-wicket loss for the hosts.
Kuldeep was included in India’s squad for the remarkable five-match Test series against England earlier this year but did not play. Ravindra Jadeja was the main spinner during that tour, supported by Washington Sundar.
The Indian team's management faced significant backlash for not featuring Kuldeep in the playing eleven during that series. Nevertheless, captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir demonstrated their confidence in their strategy, leading the series to a 2-2 draw and quieting the critics.
In this match, wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant made his comeback to international cricket after recovering from a toe injury sustained during the fourth Test against England in Manchester. Additionally, all-rounder Axar Patel returned to the playing eleven as India fielded four spinners for the opening match.
