Ranchi, Nov 29 (NationPress) Stand-in captain KL Rahul expressed that the team would be even more thrilled if the iconic MS Dhoni makes an appearance at the initial ODI against South Africa at the JSCA International Stadium this Sunday. Following a 2-0 Test series loss to South Africa, India aims to bounce back with this ODI series opener in Dhoni’s hometown.

Rahul began his ODI journey under Dhoni’s leadership, scoring a century in Harare back in 2016. He is ready to take on a dual role similar to Dhoni’s longstanding one—wearing the wicketkeeper’s gloves while leading the squad from the back and finishing the innings with his batting.

“We’ve all played under him. We’re his admirers, and we’ve shared the field together. So, we are all friends, and to know someone like MS is a tremendous opportunity, especially considering his success as an Indian player. We all hold him in high regard as a person,” said Rahul during the pre-match press briefing on Saturday.

“If he also comes to watch the match, not just the fans, we will be even more excited. We aim to enjoy playing here and hopefully secure a victory, delivering a commendable performance that entertains the audience, making MS Dhoni proud of our success,” he added.

Rahul also confirmed his position at number six and shared his enthusiasm about having Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli back for the ODI series. “I will be batting in the same position. I’ve been playing at number six since the Champions Trophy, so it’s familiar ground for me. We have all-rounders like Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, and Nitish Reddy available,” he stated.

“We’ll evaluate the best eleven and finalize it in the evening, so you’ll know by tomorrow. In ODI cricket, taking singles holds as much significance as hitting boundaries, unlike in T20 formats. This is something Virat has mastered throughout his career and it’s a skill we’ve tried to emulate.”

“In the dressing room, we discuss ways to improve as batsmen and how to rotate the strike more effectively. Having Virat back with us is a significant boost; he’s eager to participate in these matches,” he elaborated.

India is also welcoming back veteran Ravindra Jadeja, who missed the recent 2-1 series loss in Australia. “Jadeja has been a vital part of the Indian team for many years. He has consistently delivered results, and we all appreciate what he contributes. I’m glad to have him back in the ODI setup. He missed the Australia series but was part of the successful Champions Trophy,” Rahul noted.

“He played a crucial role in our triumph during that tournament with his all-round abilities. His presence is invaluable for me as captain or any other captain leading the team. It’s beneficial to have experienced players who have consistently performed,” added Rahul.

Opener Ruturaj Gaikwad is also back in the national team, and Rahul affirmed that he will get his opportunity during the series. “Rutu is undoubtedly a class player. With the limited chances he’s had, he’s made the most of them, showcasing his talents. Unfortunately, the top five or six positions are quite settled and performing well, which can be disappointing for those not getting enough chances.”

“However, we feel pleased for those who are in the team and doing their jobs effectively. It’s unfortunate for the players who miss out, but Ruturaj will get his chance due to some injuries. I look forward to giving him that opportunity to demonstrate his capabilities,” he said.

He concluded by mentioning that if fellow wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant is included in the playing XI for Sunday’s match, he will assume keeping responsibilities. “Rishabh missed out due to injury, but he’s been a valuable member of the team for a long time. Everyone knows his potential and what he brings.”

“With the players already performing in the team, sometimes you have to await your opportunity. You’ll find out tomorrow who makes the cut. He can also contribute significantly as a batter. But if he’s in the eleven, he’ll take the gloves, and I’ll field,” he stated.
