Bhubaneswar, Oct 10 (NationPress) Former paddler Achanta Sharath Kamal is optimistic that the Indian team will transform their medal outcomes at the Asian Table Tennis Team Championships 2025, following a bronze medal win in both the men’s and women’s team events in the previous edition.
The tournament is set to take place in Bhubaneswar from October 11-15 and will feature only men’s and women’s team competitions. Furthermore, it will act as a qualifier for the 2026 ITTF World Team Championships, with the top 13 teams in each category securing a spot.
“It’s fantastic to return to Odisha. The last significant event held here was in 2019, and hosting the Asian Championships in Bhubaneswar is particularly meaningful. India has shown commendable performance — we clinched bronze medals in both men’s and women’s team events last time, and this year, we are eager to change the color of those medals,” Kamal expressed.
Regarding India's rising international profile, he added, “Our players are in remarkable form. Manav Thakkar currently holds the World No. 39 spot in men’s singles, while our doubles and mixed doubles teams rank among the world’s top ten. With local support and familiar conditions, the Indian team has every opportunity to deliver its best-ever performance.”
The celebrated paddler also praised Odisha’s exceptional sports vision and infrastructure, stating, “The organization here is world-class. It’s my first experience at this stadium, and the entire sports complex is simply outstanding. Odisha has the potential to host significant global tournaments across various sports. I’m confident the state will play a crucial role when India hosts major international events in the future.”
Earlier this year, Kamal, one of India's most decorated table tennis players, announced his retirement. He served as a flag bearer for India at the 2024 Paris Olympics and has amassed numerous accolades at the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, and Asian Championships.
