New Delhi, Sep 24 (NationPress) New Zealand captain Sophie Devine has pinpointed co-hosts India and Sri Lanka, along with the reigning champions Australia, as significant challengers in the upcoming 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup, which kicks off on September 30.

Having triumphed in the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup, New Zealand is now setting its sights on securing the 50-over title, a feat last achieved in 2000. Sophie has stated her intention to retire from this format after the upcoming World Cup.

“Every team presents a unique challenge, but we recognize that the defending champions Australia will be particularly hard to overcome. Facing them in our opening match will be an excellent launch for the tournament. India at home poses a significant threat due to the support they receive and the depth of their squad, while Sri Lanka has shown that playing on home turf is a true advantage. Undoubtedly, these three teams will be tough opponents,” Sophie remarked in her ICC column on Wednesday.

She further elaborated on the team’s preparations for the tournament, mentioning that ten players, alongside head coach Ben Sawyer and assistant coach Craig McMillan, had a two-week training camp in August at the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) Academy in Chennai.

“In terms of acclimatization, the team has been diligently focusing on areas we believe will be crucial for success in Indian and Sri Lankan conditions. We were fortunate to have a camp in India where some of our batters could experience the local conditions, which I believe will be immensely beneficial.

“A major focus for us has been on fitness and our ability to adapt to the conditions we will encounter. The team has been putting in hard work throughout the New Zealand winter, but we trust that our strength and conditioning efforts will allow us to perform well,” she said.

With a blend of seasoned players and emerging talent in the squad, Sophie expressed her enthusiasm about the new dynamics within the White Ferns as this tournament approaches. “It’s quite emotional to admit, but with the young talent currently coming through our squad, I feel a sense of excitement about our World Cup lineup.

“Everyone has been putting in significant effort, which is gratifying to witness. Our younger players, such as Eden Carson and Izzy Gaze, have really established themselves after a couple of years with the White Ferns. I’m eager to see what they will contribute to the tournament.

“The experienced players like Maddy Green have been exceptional and have elevated their performances. Brooke Halliday is also a crucial part of our team. Having a left-handed player in the lineup often complicates matters for the opposition. This tournament is set to showcase the fresh talent emerging in New Zealand as we aim to clinch the title for the first time since 2000,” she elaborated.

Sophie concluded by stating that New Zealand is enthusiastic about embracing the cultural diversity of the subcontinent while maintaining a focus on delivering strong performances throughout the World Cup.

“India has always been a remarkable place to play cricket, and everyone recognizes the passion the people have for the game. Sri Lanka is another fantastic country to visit, vibrant and enjoyable, and we have cherished our past experiences there.

“We are excited about traveling to different locations, immersing ourselves in the cultures, and everything that comes with it, both on and off the field. We will take time to enjoy ourselves, but we are also committed to performing well and winning over fans,” she stated.
