New Delhi, June 5 (NationPress) The head coach of the Indian men’s national football team, Manolo Marquez, has officially finalized a squad of 25 players ahead of the critical AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Hong Kong on June 10.
The Indian team initially arrived in Thailand with a larger squad of 28 players for a FIFA international friendly, which ended in a challenging 2-0 defeat on Wednesday.
Goalkeeper Hrithik Tiwari and defenders Mehtab Singh and Subhasish Bose have been released from the squad and will make their way back to India directly from Thailand. The remaining 25 players have headed to Bangkok to intensify their preparations for the essential clash against Hong Kong.
India kicked off their qualifying journey with a goalless draw against Bangladesh in March. In light of the recent defeat to Thailand, the stakes are high as they approach this crucial away match. All four teams in India’s group currently share the same point total of one after the opening round of matches.
In a competitive match on Wednesday, India displayed moments of skill and determination, but were ultimately bested by their opponents' precision. Goals from Benjamin Davis (8’) in the first half and Poramet Arjvilai (59’) in the second half secured the victory for Thailand. India, while spirited and innovative at times, faced disappointment from missed chances and defensive errors.
