New Delhi, Nov 19 (NationPress) Graeme Smith, the former captain of South Africa and currently the commissioner of the SA20 League, expressed admiration for the evolution of the Indian Premier League (IPL), asserting that this ten-team tournament has emerged as one of the most significant leagues globally across all sports.
During his IPL career, Smith played in 29 matches, scoring a total of 739 runs and achieving four fifties. He represented the Pune Warriors in the 2011 season and was a part of the Rajasthan Royals (RR) under the iconic Shane Warne throughout the inaugural seasons, including clinching the trophy in 2008.
“Many individuals overlook the initial years of the IPL. Numerous factors contributed to the league's remarkable growth. Today, the IPL stands as one of the largest leagues in the world across all sports. Over the first three seasons, we have witnessed substantial growth in several areas of SA20, and we hope for this to persist,” Smith remarked at the SA20 India Day event.
He emphasized the necessity of bolstering the league and fostering a robust local player base, drawing comparisons between SA20 and the early days of the IPL. “The essence of everything is, and will always be, the cricket product. Each year, the cricket quality improves, and the local player base continues to expand. This has been a core strength of the IPL,” he noted.
Reflecting on his experience from 2008, the inaugural IPL season with the Rajasthan Royals, Smith highlighted how the rise of Indian talent showcases the impact of a solid local foundation. “This is what we aspire to achieve at SA20, in conjunction with global talent,” he concluded.
