Grenada, July 2 (NationPress) Richard Kettleborough is set to become England's most capped Test umpire on the field when he officiates in the second Test between the West Indies and Australia, kicking off in Grenada on Thursday. Hailing from Sheffield, Kettleborough’s Test umpiring journey began in Galle 15 years ago. He will be umpiring his 93rd on-field Test, surpassing his original mentor, David Shepherd.
“It’s an immense privilege. I truly never thought this moment would arrive, but I feel a great sense of pride in what I’ve accomplished. Surpassing the legendary David Shepherd – someone I looked up to during my formative years – is a milestone I cherish. I had the opportunity to stand alongside ‘Shep’ during a County Championship match in 2005 at Scarborough, which was an unforgettable experience,” Kettleborough shared with ecb.co.uk.
Only three umpires – Aleem Dar, Rudi Koertzen, and Steve Bucknor – have officiated in a century of on-field Test matches, and Kettleborough is on the brink of joining this elite club.
“I have always regarded Test cricket as the pinnacle of our sport, so reaching 100 on-field Test matches would represent the zenith of my career,” he mentioned.
Australia secured victory in the opening Test against the West Indies by 159 runs. This upcoming match may also see the return of Steve Smith.
The seasoned batsman, who was sidelined during the first Test of the ongoing three-match series due to a finger injury, has recently had his stitches removed and reunited with his teammates in the Caribbean on Sunday.
