Kolkata, May 7 (NationPress) Veteran batsman Manish Pandey steps in for the injured Venkatesh Iyer as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) opted to bat first after winning the toss against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in match 57 of IPL 2025 at the Eden Gardens on Wednesday.
This match is crucial for the defending champions KKR, as a win against the already-eliminated CSK will keep their playoff aspirations alive. Following the toss, KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane confirmed that Iyer is sidelined due to stitches on his hand, allowing Pandey to join the playing eleven.
“It looks like a good wicket. In our last two games, we batted first and performed well. We aim to set a solid total and defend it. It’s essential to take it one game at a time and not overthink the future. We've learned a lot from our previous match, and the team is eager for this game. Close losses happen, but confidence is key. If a chance arises, we will give our best,” he stated.
CSK captain MS Dhoni announced that Devon Conway and Urvil Patel are making their way into the playing eleven, replacing Sam Curran and Shaik Rasheed, respectively. Patel, the wicketkeeper-batsman, was brought in as a replacement for the injured Vansh Bedi.
Urvil gained attention for scoring the joint-fastest T20 century by an Indian batter, achieving a stunning 28-ball hundred for Gujarat against Tripura in last year’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT). He will open the innings for CSK alongside the promising teenage talent Ayush Mhatre.
“I have played a lot of cricket here; it feels like home. I’ve participated in various tournaments and leagues in this area. Our focus is on addressing the issues we've faced this tournament,” he added.
“We are looking for solutions in our middle order batting and bowling. We are giving opportunities to players, but we want to finalize a strong playing XI or XII. It’s the right time to explore these dynamics. CSK has two quality spinners, making it a challenging match,” he said.
Following the toss, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that the national anthem will be played at the Eden Gardens before the game starts.
