Mumbai, May 12 (NationPress) The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) extended heartfelt congratulations to Virat Kohli for his remarkable Test career that has set new benchmarks in excellence, leadership, and devotion in Indian cricket.

Virat's exit from the longest format signifies the end of an era that not only lifted Indian cricket on the world stage but also reignited public enthusiasm for Test cricket at a time when limited-overs formats predominated. He reinstated the purest form of the game as a centerpiece of cricketing excellence. His profound respect for the format was clear not just in his statements but also in the fierce pride with which he donned India’s white kit.

“Virat Kohli will forever be remembered among the greatest to have played Test cricket. His drive for runs was matched only by his dedication to excellence in the most demanding format. His leadership marked a transformative phase in how India approached overseas matches—with tenacity, confidence, and a determination to never settle for less. He has inspired a generation to take pride in the whites, and his influence on Indian cricket will last for decades,” remarked BCCI president Roger Binny.

From debuting against the West Indies in 2011 to his final Test earlier this year, Virat's red-ball journey extended 14 years, characterized by remarkable consistency, fierce competitiveness, and bold leadership. He concludes his Test career with a total of 9,230 runs across 123 matches, boasting an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries and 31 fifties.

However, his true legacy goes beyond mere statistics. He transformed the mindset with which Indian cricket approached Test matches—persistent, aggressive, and unwavering. As captain, he led India in 68 Tests, achieving 40 victories, making him the most successful Test captain in Indian cricket history. Under his guidance, India reached the No. 1 ranking and maintained that status for an impressive 42 consecutive months.

“Test cricket found not just an ambassador but a genuine guardian in Virat Kohli. He led by example, raised standards, and emphasized fitness, discipline, and mental fortitude. His batting achievements—especially in challenging overseas conditions—will serve as benchmarks for future cricketers. He retires as India’s most successful Test captain, setting a high standard for upcoming generations,” BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia added.

The 115 and 141 he scored in the Adelaide Test during his captaincy debut in 2014 set an ambitious tone for what followed. His aggressive approach was evident as India chased down 364 runs. This made him the first visiting batter since 1961 to score two centuries in a Test match in Australia—an unparalleled achievement. The most formidable opponents often brought out the best in him, and it was in 2018–19 when India, under his leadership, became the first Asian team to win a Test series in Australia.

Under his captaincy, India also secured victories overseas in Sri Lanka and the West Indies, and they were runners-up in the inaugural ICC World Test Championship Final in 2021. At home, India was unbeaten in Test series while he was captain, winning 10 out of the 11 series he led.
