New Delhi, March 5 (NationPress) Former Indian captain Anil Kumble feels that KL Rahul faces undue criticism, but his steady performance in India's ICC Champions Trophy semi-final against Australia should enhance his self-assurance.

Batting at No. 6 in a high-stakes chase of 265, Rahul finished not out on 42 from 34 balls, steering India to victory with crucial partnerships alongside Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya.

Kumble, during a segment on ESPNcricinfo Match Day, expressed that Rahul should have batted before Axar Patel, who contributed well but fell at a pivotal moment. "I recognize Axar performed well in forming a partnership with Virat Kohli, yet someone like KL Rahul coming in at that moment—this is what he excels at. If he reaches 30, he will ensure that you succeed. He accomplishes that consistently," Kumble stated.

The former leg-spinner emphasized the relentless pressure on Rahul. "If he excels, it’s anticipated. If he falters even once, suddenly everyone turns against him. He faced pressure, even with his wicketkeeping in the last match, but today he demonstrated his true potential."

Rahul arrived at a challenging point when India still required 87 runs off 90 balls. Kohli had stabilized the innings with his usual finesse, but the chase was still uncertain. Rahul batted with purpose, effectively rotating the strike and choosing his opportunities to attack. His innings ensured India maintained their momentum, and he fittingly remained not out to guide them to victory.

Although Rahul typically plays as a top-order batsman, the management has utilized him as a middle-order finisher in recent seasons. His capacity to adjust to varying roles was evident once again in Dubai.

Sanjay Manjrekar, also on the ESPNcricinfo panel, provided a different viewpoint. He suggested that limited time at the crease might actually benefit Rahul, allowing him to play more freely.

"At times, we ponder if less time is advantageous for KL Rahul because he then focuses solely on attacking," Manjrekar remarked. "I’ve seldom seen KL Rahul play an innings where he proceeds steadily, accumulating runs like Virat Kohli. So perhaps batting lower in the order suits him better."

Manjrekar also highlighted Rahul’s mental challenges, which are often apparent during his difficult phases. "I’m thrilled for him. This is a player who is very sensitive. Each setback seems to weigh on his mind. He appears to be a kind person, and India wants him in the playing XI. This kind of innings… at the end of the match, he was a joyful man."
